But the real surprise of this US flick was that it also delivers some very beautiful, philosophical messages, underneath all the glitz and glamour of a fantasy movie, that from the outset seemed very simple…
Let it go ..
The evolution of the central figure and the trials of life and doubts he has to deal with, raises quite a lot of questions on our own visions of things.. To what extent we sometimes have tunnel vision, and try to control situations mentally, whilst sometimes it is best to let things run their course.. The story begins with a narcissistic surgeon, full of himself, unpleasant, egocentric with a stunted vision and a down to earth view of life. He believes that he knows everything, all there is to know. The events in the film push him to evolve, to see things differently, to be more humble and more open-minded in the face of all that man does not know and cannot control.
We gradually begin to appreciate this character of anti-heros, who stands up to the limits of traditional medicine and to his own capabilities .. Only, when ruined and at the end of the road does he turn to help in the form of mystic healing. . But in order to do this successfully, he must push back the limits of his own spirit, and completely changes his vision of life .. Along with his spiritual master (Tilda Swinton) he learns to know and understand himself and to discover his capacities… By observing Dr. Strange’s evolution, we realize the importance of letting go, but also to what extent it is difficult for us.. In order to realize that, Life puts us sometimes in front of situations to trigger that change – the difficulty is then to accept the new order and follow the new path – and no matter if we like it or not, we have to deal with it. Then starts the magic…
Expand your mind..
Another interesting subject that is touched upon in the film is the link between the body and the spirit…a passionate and very real concept that the doctor doesn’t seem to grasp in the beginning. We really see the evolution of the hero when he begins to realize he knows nothing..He finally opens up his spirit to other possibilities, discovers other univers, energies and starts feeling the real power of the mind over the bodies. The film portrays the idea of parallel universes also, different levels of consciousness, etheric bodies and chakras. In short, a lot of themes that really broaden our ways of thinking…
It is a long road to open human mind and heart but our anti hero discovers meditation, intensive reading, the ideal cocktail that we should all use to become wiser and gain some distance to certain events. This practice helps us to to live with ourselves and get in touch with capacities that we were not even aware of.. It also teaches us how to acquire the important discernment attitude.. and last but not least, opening our mind will allow us to get over the ‘material” side, ego, power and other primary emotions.. No time like the present eh ?
To conclude, I loved this film and its little hints and reminders, to do no harm in a society where we are all guilty of being a little too into ourselves… and how sometimes we ignore the most important things. I find that it is always beneficial and positive to reflect on these kinds of things..
