# Top 5 home remedies for Cold, Cough & Cie..

With this never ending cold spring, grey sky and January feels like temperatures, hello tonsilitis, colds, sinus infection and sore throats.. And because I have just been through this, I wanted to make a special post about natural remedies to get rid of your cold and cough without taking medication or chemicals..

5 Natural remedies that will work wonders ..

1/ White tiger balm ..

This mixture of camphor, menthol, eucalyptus and clove essential oils is ultra effective to ease congestion in respiratory tracts .. You can find tiger balm rather easily in CVS, organic stores or online. It is the best ally for blocked noses and chesty coughs… Applied in the evening in strong massages on the chest and all the way up to the throat, it helps you to breathe, loosen up the gunk in your chest and frees the lungs and nose.. You’ll feel a cold and then a hot effect on your skin, breathing will get easier.. it will help you get a good night’s sleep and make you feel a little better while your immune system does its job..

>>Be careful when applying directly to your face, avoid contact with eyes and mouth, I simply do apply it to my nostrils and 2 cms around them, or onto my temples if I have a headache…

2/ Green Clay (montmorillonite)..

For sore throat, sensitive vocal cords, irritated and painful larynx, do not hesitate to take a spoonful of clay which we let melt in the mouth.. Sucking clay while not ultra pleasant is extremely effective and relieves pain and irritations.. Otherwise “milk clay” also does the trick ; dilute a little clay in some mineral water, mix with a wooden spoon, leave to rest and then drink. (We can reuse the bit of the clay which stays at the bottom of the glass for another drink or two).

>>I always have a tube of green clay by Cattier in my closet, it is one of the best.

3/ Lemon-honey-ginger..

Our grandmothers have sworn by hot toddy or Brandy, but a good old hot lemon with some honey and ginger in it is just as effective to relieve sore throat, non-stop coughing and even congestion..

>>Cut fresh ginger into small slices and crush them slightly. Put them in a cup of water and bring to a boil. Press the lemon juice in a mug, add the boiling water and a good spoonful of honey.. Drink while warm and wrapped up in a cosy tartan rug. Repeat several times a day 😉

4/ Propolis oral spray..

Propolis is a real treasure form the hive.. Antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti germs, anti-everything, this “bee-glue” is a powerful health balm, a 100 percent natural shield that can be used without risk to prevent and cure common cold, sore throat, respiratory tract infections and so on..  There are numerous oral sprays, made with propolis, royal jelly, honey and essential oil .. They are really effective to clean and soothe a scratchy and soare throat and, when I was sick, my propolis oral spray did not leave my hand bag 😉 I spray once or twice every hour in my throat just to soften and relieve the burning sensation, to decrease my cough and to sooth my croaky, raspy voice..

>>My favorite spray was the one from Nature & découvertes  , but unfortunately they do not make it any more at the moment, so I tried the one by  Ladrôme made with propolis and essential oil (not bad at all) + the organic gums also by Ladrôme  made with Propolis, honey and ravintsara essential oil, which did me the world of good…

5/ Homeopathy and essential oils..

Essential oils .. very effective to naturally treat the body (and the spirit) .. In case of sore throat, tonsilitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, respiratory illness and etc, add 1 or 2 drops of Tea tree, Eucalyptus Radiata or of Ravinsara into a teaspoon of honey (never ingest essential oil pure!!)..

>>A good steam with essential oil is also perfect to ease chest congestion, breathing problems, nasal voices and to loosen mucous and phlegm : add a few drops (2 or 3) of Tea tree, Eucalyptus radiata and Ravinsara in a salad bowl, pour some boiling water and lean over the bowl.. Get as close as you can while still being comfortable. Use the towel to cover your head like a tent, trapping the steam, and breathe deeply. Ideally, do this for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day… It will help soothe and open your airways as well as help fight off bacteria or a virus.

Homeopathy.. since being a little girl, my mother treated us with homeopathy, and I love these small but very effective natural pills that look after adults, children and animals, while avoiding antibiotics and other chemical remedies… Looking after ourselves with homoeopathy is easy but nevertheless, do not hesitate to get advice from a homeopathic doctor, because it is necessary to be rather precise in doses and choices of remedies for more efficiency.

>>I will give you some ideas, the basics found in my mothers little french book le guide familial de l’homéopathie.. which is really helpful..

  • High fever : Belladona and Mercurius several times a day, and if the fever is not so high, Ferrum phosphoricum.
  • Sore throat with burning sensation/ hay fever: Apis Melifica
  • The beginning of a cold: Rhumex
  • Pharyngitis (swollen and inflamed back of the throat) / Need scrape and feels irritated: Argentum
  • Tonsilitis Red throat : Belladona/Mercurius, 3 granules of each 3x a day / Inflammation : swollen throat : Apis Melifica / With white dots: Mercurius Solubilis / With pain at the nape of the neck and the ears : Phytolaca

So there you go, a few home remedies that can give you relief and avoid loading your body with chemicals  😉 do not hesitate to share yours!!!

Kisses

Ps : It’s a good idea to check in with a doctor if your cold or cough doesn’t clear within three weeks. Also, seek medical attention if you have chest pain, feel short of breath, or cough up blood.
