# The treasures of the Indian Ocean : Bird island @Seychelles..

During our last trip to Seychelles, we got lucky enough to spend a few days on Bird island ; a dream like paradise, wild, green and preserved, lost in the middle of the Indian ocean.. and after a short flight from Mahé, we finally made it to this secluded and small island which has been on my bucket list for years..

Bird island is one of the Seychelles’ 115 islands.. This is a beautiful coralian island, almost inhabited and where the fauna and flora are really abundant, wild and protected.. the island shelters a small village for local people and a cute eco lodge for the very few lucky tourists who can enjoy this hidden gem..

Bird’s landscapes and scenaries are just eye candy.. soft white sands beaches stretching out to beautiful turquoise waters, translucid warm lagons surrounded by green jungle .. the set is just perfect.. And the even more stunning thing is when you get to meet the stars of the Island : birds.. millions of them.. Different species are nesting and flying around everywhere on the island.. in the trees, on the beach, in the sky.. I just loved to watch them during hours.. And if you’re lucky you’ll get to watch the sea turtle nesting as well ..

First impression // If heaven is a place, this must be it ..

As soon as you land on Bird island, you just want to go wandering around in this beautiful and exotic place you’ve foreseen from the window’s plane.. Once we dropped the luggages in our small wooden chalet, we ran outside to explore our new playground.. I was so excited and happy to finally be in this place I’ve been dreaming of for years !! And this was it !!! I was on Bird Island !!!

The discovering of the island’s long sandy beaches was just as perfect as in my dreams.. A Crusoe feels like paradise were I could swim in the warm ocean or sunbathe on the beautiful beaches for hours with my Love.. How cool was this.. Actually the landscape was so perfect one could think it is photoshopped ; the sky and the sea were meeting in stunning shades of blues, the sand was so white we could barely look at it without sunglasses and the jungle added the final touch of green to this perfect postal card.. Pinch me I must be dreaming !

During our little exploration on the beach, a weird noise caught our attention.. Following the sound which got louder as we got closer, we found the spot were millions of birds were hatching.. (mainly terns in this spot, other species were nesting elsewhere in the island ).. It was such a wonderful and stunning sight.. We never got to watch so many birds before.. and of course we hold our breath and stopped moving or talking to avoid scaring them..

They flew away eventually, all at the same time, passing above us, around, flying everywhere, just like bees.. Omg this was truly wonderful and impressive at the same time.. At this very moment, we realized how lucky we were to witness this.. and how wonderful it was to stay in this unique and secluded island were Nature is still reign supreme..

The Eco lodge ..

Regarding accommodations : simplicity is the key.. The 24 wooden cute chalets of the lodge nestled among the coco palms are perfectly matching the setting.. We were only 10 guests during our stay and the island was almost ours.. So magical and romantic! The chalets are quite simple but still, the bed is comfy and the room is ok. There is no TV, no AC and the power is limited but you get exactly what you need.. and to be honest we did not spend much time in the room, too busy wandering around all day 😉

Food..

Home made, local and organic.. Everything tastes so good, you’d better go swimming everyday if you don’t want to put on too much weight during your stay :-).. Every day we discovered various, tasty and authentic meals at the buffet style restaurant. Usually they are serving 2 different starters, 2 main sides dishes (vegetarian ) + 1 meal with meat and 1 with fresh fish.. And don’t even start me on the deserts … So yummy !!!

Activities..

The sun wakes up pretty early in the Seychelles and so should you (at least a few times) if you want to enjoy the beautiful sunrise and all the wildlife activities of Bird Island.. Mornings are just perfect to go wandering around, bird watching, snorkeling or even kayaking in the quite water of the lagon during low tide.. The afternoon is perfect for chilling, swimming or sunbathing on the beach, playing with tortoises, reading a book, napping.. well to enjoy this timeless getaway.. And around 4:30 pm you can join a guided nature tour to learn passionating things about nature, birds, sea turtles and tortoises.. before getting ready to watch the beautiful sunset on the beach.. such a busy day !

For who ?

Nature and Animal lovers, sunseakers, Crusoe islands and wild beaches enthusiasts, honeymoon couples or traveling lovers, friends, families, birds lovers.. Well actually anyone should stop by and get to discover this amazing island.. Even families with toddlers or bigger kids will love this place.. (The only persons who should stay away from Bird Island are the ones who don’t give a damn about Nature and Animals and who are disrespectful to it.. )

The perfect Stay ?

3 to 4 days minimum are necessary to enjoy the island, chill, explore, and make the most of this timeless experience in this mesmerising paradise.. Make sure to plan your stay in Bird Island at the end of your trip to Seychelles to take full advantage of this relaxing break from the rest of the world before flying back home fully refreshed and filled with good vibes ..

+++ What we loved +++

The flight !! Flying above the Indian Ocean and enjoying the amazing scenery from the sky was priceless.. And you feel like the luckiest person in the world when you land on this small gem, lost in the middle of the ocean..
Petting the huge tortoises .. They use to come and “park” around our chalet.. so funny. We spent some time feeding them, giving them some water (a lot of it !!) and showering them with our exterior shower.. yes they loved it !!! Such a great time with this lovelies !!
The homemade coconut ice cream !!! OMG I would kill for one more spoon of this desert !!
The simplicity of this place.. The serenity, peace and happiness you feel while you’re here..
The beautiful and Crusoe feels like beaches.. one of the most beautiful and wild I have ever seen..
Nature.. being surrounded by this almost untouched nature and wildlife is so incredible.. Fauna and flora are quite preserved on land and under the sea.. We even met sea turtles and big rays while kayaking on the cristal clear water of the lagon !!

Wifi !! I know, while you stay on an island all you need is love, sea, sex and the sun.. but.. the wifi was working really well and that was the icing on the cake or the coconut on the palm tree 😉

– – The little drawbacks – –

None in particular .. although I could point out some missing details int the rooms that could make it a little more cosy such as a mosquito net (much needed!) and some organic or local samples of beauty products rather than this ugly soap dispenser in the shower..

And beware of the mosquitos & cie.. I’ve been bitten from head to toes while Peter got nothing (so unfair ).. Turn of the light after 6pm and bring some organic repellent, essential oils and the little nomad diffuser by Puressentiel.. I did forget everything in France.. I always travel with all of this except when I need it of course..

What to bring along with you in Bird Island :

Moskito repellent, essential oils, bracelets and diffuser Puressentiel !!
A pocket lamp (the lodge provides some but you should always carry one in your bag anyway)
Sunscreen lotion (spf 30 or 50 minimum), Sunglasses, hat, cap .. The sun hits big time in the island since it is in the middle of the ocean and the sand is so white you can barely see without sunglasses.. So be careful and protect yourself to avoid any sunburns or even a sunstroke..
Always carry a bottle of water with you on the island
Bring some pareos or sarong (lighter than a beach towel to carry around)
Scuba dive gear (the lodge also provides some but it is always cool to have your own, especially if you stay in other places in Seychelles who do not offer this equipment)
Do’t forget to take a Tote bag, a beach bag, a small bag pack or even a small basket to carry your beach wear with you while exploring the island (pareo, scuba gear, sunscreen, water etc)..

Conclusion //

Awesome, perfect, amazing.. !!! Best memories ever ! This experience was even more amazing to me since I’ve been dreaming of this island for many years.. but still, I’m being quite objective when I say this place met all my expectations (and believe me they are getting more and more high standard).. I warmly recommend this mesmerizing paradise were wildlife is going peacefully along with humans.. which is quite uncommon nowadays.. How wonderful it was to live in this small chalets among the jungle with no one there but the birds, the tortoises, the ocean and my sweetheart.. Such a romantic place…

Bird island is truly the ideal place for those who love being close to nature.. This timeless getaway not only allows us to reconnect with Mother Nature but it also helps us to let go of our everyday worries to focus again on the essential and on ourselves.. all of this while staying in a postal card setting, far away from the world… All we need is here.. and I guess this is the real luxury in life ..
