Letās fly back to a sunny destination today shall we ?Ā
So, a few weeks ago, a super cool modeling job took us, Peter & I to Grenada, a pretty little island, nicknamedĀ Spice Island, located just beneath Guadeloupe and which is part of a little collectionĀ of islands like Carriacou or Petite Martinique.. Ā If cruising is one of the most popular ways to explore the Caribbean, we canĀ actually also stop by on each island for a few days, before continuing on our trip, or exploreĀ Grenada before starting a cruise in the Grenadines. This is exactly what we did : we stayed in Grenada for 3 days to enjoy the Caribbean vibes before joining the shooting team on the yacht and start cruising ..
About CaribbeanĀ hotels..
FindingĀ luxury AND beautiful hotels in the Caribbean can be tricky.. Not only is everything very very expensive but its also quiteĀ unattractiveā¦ Of course thereĀ are some luxury hotels but most of the time, I was not convinced by the decoration which IĀ found ratherĀ tackyĀ and cheap and even less so by the services, not to mention theĀ price which is just disproportionate.. We are worlds apart from theĀ RobinsonĀ CrusoeĀ spirit, the cocoon style boutique hotels or the rustic chic ecoĀ lodges that I am a huge fan of.. So basically itās betterĀ to choose some guesthouses or some cheaper hotel, local and cute, with a little charm, asĀ opposedĀ to these so called āluxuriousā big and ugly complexes which have recently startedĀ sproutingĀ up all over and which are swarmed with tourists.. InĀ shortĀ inĀ GrenadaĀ I foundĀ only one place that IĀ thoughtĀ was really cute, peaceful, with a real Caribbean vibes and I will be talking about it today..
Welcome to Maca Bana..
In a few words, Maca Bana is small luxury hotel, full of charm and situated on one of the mostĀ beautiful beaches of the island.. I wouldnāt really call it a luxury boutique hotel but rather a small complex with simple yet pleasant villas spread out in a beautiful tropicalĀ garden with a breathtaking view over all the bay and the beach below.. Just gorgeous..
First impressions :
Super cute and everything, but something disturbed for a few sec when we first arrived : the hotel location.. It is just a few minutes away from the small local airport ! NormallyĀ Iām not a fan when the hotels andĀ airportsĀ are right next to each other but this time everything was fine : we did not hear anything ! The planes or the noise werenātĀ especiallyĀ disturbingĀ at all as they are all really smaller planes and they do not fly quite often ! So no worries about the airport, itās no problem whatsoeverā¦
Rooms..
Spacious, bright, clean, and very pleasant.. Of course there is a Caribbean touch and style in term of decoration, but IĀ found it to be subtle and not too much and there is also a fully equipped kitchen forĀ those of you wanting to cookā¦Ā The best part of the room is the sunny terrace complete with a heated jacuzzi, the beautiful view on the beach and the waves lullaby.. Dream like !
Food
Restaurant is just underneath, on the beach :Ā it is really a cool spot to have a drink or for late lunch after the beach. Iām not going to lie ; for vegetarians like us there isnāt really much choice, but there are several different plates of pasta, someĀ soup and french friesā¦ Not the healthiest meals but we worked things out.. The happiest kids will be the sea food and fish lovers, who will be completely won over byĀ all there is to offer. In terms of price itās pretty reasonable, especially seen as usuallyĀ on the smaller islands everything is imported and quite expensive .
For who /
Everybody ! Ā Family, friends, couples andĀ evenĀ those with young children becauseĀ the beach is great for kids andĀ particularlyĀ safe, quiet, peaceful and protected.
4 things we loved :
- The peaceful and relaxing vibes of this place..
- The hotel amazing beach ! We saw others in the area, crowded and unpleasant and thisĀ one was just a little gem, seriously so peaceful, secluded, calm and lined with coconutĀ palms.
- The breathtaking view from our room, and falling asleep to the sound of theĀ waves, I never get tired of it.
- The welcome gift, that we found on our bed upon our arrival : delicious dark chocolate, made in Grenada..
Drawbacks :
- The Breakfast was not included in the price apart from the first day, and afterĀ that you have to go food shoppingā¦ This was quite surprising given the price ofĀ the room, it would have been nice to have an all inclusive breakfast..
- The road leading downĀ to the beach and the restaurant is a little bit sloppy but thatās ok unless youāre really old or with a broken leg š
What to do on the island :
- Rent a car to explore theĀ island.. As I said, there is not much really to do apart from take some time out, go to theĀ beach, haveĀ a fewĀ excursionsĀ or walks, but not everything is really that worth it..
To see, the North of the island and its protected beaches, but remember youĀ need to be prepared for a four hour drive, and that means eight hours there andĀ back, so leave early! - Scuba diving in theĀ sculpture park, apparently this is amazing, I didnāt do it but ifĀ anyone did please tell us about your experience!
- The capital, saint George and its local market, to visit only on Saturday or boat free day, or really early in the morning.. On paper it isĀ tempting but in fact it is just overcrowed with all the tourists that comes from the huge cruising boats: the market is located right next to the port where the enormous cruiseĀ ships land for just a few hours, to allow passengers to buy souvenirs.. Nightmare !Ā We lost half a day for nothing between the traffic jams of touristsā buses andĀ the hoards of visitors landing by boats, wanting to buy ugly craps made inĀ china.. If you want go to the local market to buy fruits and veggies forĀ example, go early in the morning but not after 10:30 am (unlike us) or find outĀ before hand which day will be no boat andĀ thereforeĀ will be a much moreĀ authentic and pleasant experienceā¦ And for your food shopping, there is a bigĀ supermarket not far from Macabana, just after the airport..
- The island of Carriacou + excursion in Tobbago Cays, is really worth seeing..Ā Carriacou is approximately 2 hours by boat from Granada
Infos :
Prices: from 440 $ the villa 1 room / jaccuzzi / fully-equipped kitchen : Ā Information & booking hereĀ //
How to get there: rather easy because the hotel is literally 3 min away from the islandsĀ airport.. So we reach the island by small plane from Fort de France or Barbados for example..Ā That really depends on your route if you make one stop on the island on a cruise or ifĀ you visit all the Grenadines islands one by one.. In every case, the island is well positionedĀ and there are constantly a line of boats connecting Grenada with Carriacou and Petite Martinique among others..
To finish :
I had such a great time in this super cute and tropical place filled with good vibesā¦ If you ever have theĀ chance to stop by on Grenada, or if youāre looking for a place to sleep on this island, do not hesitate to stay at Maca Bana ! This paradise is so nice for just relaxing and making the mostĀ of the beach either at the beginning or the end of your trip for example š
