Today, we’re talking about a subject which isn’t super glam but is well-known for its beneficial effects for both body and spirit : colon cleansing or colonic. Heard of it?
What is it?
It’s a treatment that sends water to the colon, helping to clean waste and toxins which build up over time in the folds of the intestines as well as re-educating the colon by stimulating its muscles.
>> Physically, this treatment is particularly suited to those with stomach problems (pain, constipation, bloating, inflammation of the intestines or neighbouring organs, candida overgrowth, dysbiosis, slow digestion etc.) as well as those who simply want to cleanse from time to time.
>>In terms or energy and emotional wellness, colonic is very beneficial, as the stomach is the hub of emotions (and is especially affected in hypersensitive people). It allows you to get rid of tensions and old emotions which are trapped here. Afterward, you feel lighter on every level.

How is the session?
I won’t lie… The first time is a bit strange. (For women, it’s a little bit like getting your bikini line waxed for the first time, or even worst, the first time at the gynaecologist.. you know this weird feeling right ? And as for guys, I don’t know as when I asked Peter how found, he said he doesn’t care as long as the practitioner is a woman. ^^) Anyway, you quickly get used to the strangeness of the procedure as it’s done by professionals who are used to it and reassure you, plus you don’t see anything as you are facing away… unless you want to watch !
After a short questionnaire to find out more about you, your habits, why you came, and some explanations, it’s time to start the session. You keep your top on but take of your bottoms, (obviously ^^) and you cover up with a towel & a warm blanket. You lie down on the table and when you’re ready, the practitioner introduces a small tube into the rectum (it doesn’t hurt). Once everything is in place, they send water at about 33 degrees. You can feel the water circulating a little bit, but it’s not disagreeable. What is, uncomfortable though, is when you have things that get stuck, which causes spasms or cramps. That’s how it was for me anyway. For Peter, it’s much fluid and not painful at all so I think it really depends on the person. (I tend to have inflamed intestines due to stress & candida overgrowth. That’s why I do a few sessions once a year to relieve tension here. This happens a lot with stressed people. )
The session takes around 45 mins to 1 hour depending on what needs to be evacuated. The body decides when to stop. Some bodies respond immediately, while others hold onto things and nothing comes out. It can be liked to emotions. It can make you angry or sad, as fears can be “stored” here. This means you can make the most of these sessions to let go of emotions. The practitioner is very patient during the session and stays with you throughout. He or she talks to you and might stimulate certain parts of the body to help you evacuate
FAQ..
Is it strange? Honestly, after the first few moments which were a bit “weird”, everything is fine especially as you are with a professional who is there to help you, and that helps! After a few sessions, it seems totally normal. As for the water travelling, it’s honestly not unpleasant. Though it’s not the most relaxing massage ever, either, it doesn’t hurt. 😉
How do you feel after? Afterwards, you feel lighter. For me, my stomach seems at peace which is a great feeling.
When to do it ?In general, the first time it’s recommended to do 3 sessions close to each other, as you only work a little bit of the colon each time. Then, 2/3 sessions a year, if you feel the need again, before or during a juice detox for example, after taking antibiotics, before and after a liver cleanse.
Good to know ; It’s important to reduce food intake before the session and it lighter ; 2/3 days before, you can cut out animal proteins, dairy products and gluten, to make things easier. 😉
Another important thing is to choose wisely your therapist.. The good ones do not “flush ” water like crazy into the colon.. They are helping the body during colonic with acupressure & essential oils to stimulate the meridians & the internal organs.. body does the rest.. Water is just here to give a little impulse and to stimulate the colon but there is no need of liters really (actually they should not use more than 1/2 to 1 liter per session, especially if the colon is sensitive.. ).. Anyway, before booking appointment, please do some research about the center or therapist to make sure it is a good one !
Voilà, that’s everything you need to know on colonic irrigation 😉 Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and you can also have a look on the center I go to ‘s website, they explain everything (ok it is in french but give them a call, they speak english too and they are the best ). They are in Paris, Versailles, Bordeaux and Marrakech.
