Letâs fly back to a sunny destination today shall we ?Â
So, a few weeks ago, a super cool modeling job took us, Peter & I to Grenada, a pretty little island, nicknamed Spice Island, located just beneath Guadeloupe and which is part of a little collection of islands like Carriacou or Petite Martinique..  If cruising is one of the most popular ways to explore the Caribbean, we can actually also stop by on each island for a few days, before continuing on our trip, or explore Grenada before starting a cruise in the Grenadines. This is exactly what we did : we stayed in Grenada for 3 days to enjoy the Caribbean vibes before joining the shooting team on the yacht and start cruising ..
About Caribbean hotels..
Finding luxury AND beautiful hotels in the Caribbean can be tricky.. Not only is everything very very expensive but its also quite unattractive⌠Of course there are some luxury hotels but most of the time, I was not convinced by the decoration which I found rather tacky and cheap and even less so by the services, not to mention the price which is just disproportionate.. We are worlds apart from the Robinson Crusoe spirit, the cocoon style boutique hotels or the rustic chic eco lodges that I am a huge fan of.. So basically itâs better to choose some guesthouses or some cheaper hotel, local and cute, with a little charm, as opposed to these so called âluxuriousâ big and ugly complexes which have recently started sprouting up all over and which are swarmed with tourists.. In short in Grenada I found only one place that I thought was really cute, peaceful, with a real Caribbean vibes and I will be talking about it today..
Welcome to Maca Bana..
In a few words, Maca Bana is small luxury hotel, full of charm and situated on one of the most beautiful beaches of the island.. I wouldnât really call it a luxury boutique hotel but rather a small complex with simple yet pleasant villas spread out in a beautiful tropical garden with a breathtaking view over all the bay and the beach below.. Just gorgeous..
First impressions :
Super cute and everything, but something disturbed for a few sec when we first arrived : the hotel location.. It is just a few minutes away from the small local airport ! Normally Iâm not a fan when the hotels and airports are right next to each other but this time everything was fine : we did not hear anything ! The planes or the noise werenât especially disturbing at all as they are all really smaller planes and they do not fly quite often ! So no worries about the airport, itâs no problem whatsoeverâŚ
Rooms..
Spacious, bright, clean, and very pleasant.. Of course there is a Caribbean touch and style in term of decoration, but I found it to be subtle and not too much and there is also a fully equipped kitchen for those of you wanting to cookâŚÂ The best part of the room is the sunny terrace complete with a heated jacuzzi, the beautiful view on the beach and the waves lullaby.. Dream like !
Food
Restaurant is just underneath, on the beach : it is really a cool spot to have a drink or for late lunch after the beach. Iâm not going to lie ; for vegetarians like us there isnât really much choice, but there are several different plates of pasta, some soup and french fries⌠Not the healthiest meals but we worked things out.. The happiest kids will be the sea food and fish lovers, who will be completely won over by all there is to offer. In terms of price itâs pretty reasonable, especially seen as usually on the smaller islands everything is imported and quite expensive .
For who /
Everybody !  Family, friends, couples and even those with young children because the beach is great for kids and particularly safe, quiet, peaceful and protected.
4 things we loved :
- The peaceful and relaxing vibes of this place..
- The hotel amazing beach ! We saw others in the area, crowded and unpleasant and this one was just a little gem, seriously so peaceful, secluded, calm and lined with coconut palms.
- The breathtaking view from our room, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves, I never get tired of it.
- The welcome gift, that we found on our bed upon our arrival : delicious dark chocolate, made in Grenada..
Drawbacks :
- The Breakfast was not included in the price apart from the first day, and after that you have to go food shopping⌠This was quite surprising given the price of the room, it would have been nice to have an all inclusive breakfast..
- The road leading down to the beach and the restaurant is a little bit sloppy but thatâs ok unless youâre really old or with a broken leg đ
What to do on the island :
- Rent a car to explore the island.. As I said, there is not much really to do apart from take some time out, go to the beach, have a few excursions or walks, but not everything is really that worth it..
To see, the North of the island and its protected beaches, but remember you need to be prepared for a four hour drive, and that means eight hours there and back, so leave early! - Scuba diving in the sculpture park, apparently this is amazing, I didnât do it but if anyone did please tell us about your experience!
- The capital, saint George and its local market, to visit only on Saturday or boat free day, or really early in the morning.. On paper it is tempting but in fact it is just overcrowed with all the tourists that comes from the huge cruising boats: the market is located right next to the port where the enormous cruise ships land for just a few hours, to allow passengers to buy souvenirs.. Nightmare ! We lost half a day for nothing between the traffic jams of touristsâ buses and the hoards of visitors landing by boats, wanting to buy ugly craps made in china.. If you want go to the local market to buy fruits and veggies for example, go early in the morning but not after 10:30 am (unlike us) or find out before hand which day will be no boat and therefore will be a much more authentic and pleasant experience⌠And for your food shopping, there is a big supermarket not far from Macabana, just after the airport..
- The island of Carriacou + excursion in Tobbago Cays, is really worth seeing.. Carriacou is approximately 2 hours by boat from Granada
Infos :
Prices: from 440 $ the villa 1 room / jaccuzzi / fully-equipped kitchen :  Information & booking here //
How to get there: rather easy because the hotel is literally 3 min away from the islands airport.. So we reach the island by small plane from Fort de France or Barbados for example.. That really depends on your route if you make one stop on the island on a cruise or if you visit all the Grenadines islands one by one.. In every case, the island is well positioned and there are constantly a line of boats connecting Grenada with Carriacou and Petite Martinique among others..
To finish :
I had such a great time in this super cute and tropical place filled with good vibes⌠If you ever have the chance to stop by on Grenada, or if youâre looking for a place to sleep on this island, do not hesitate to stay at Maca Bana ! This paradise is so nice for just relaxing and making the most of the beach either at the beginning or the end of your trip for example đ
